Association for Women in Architecture
Mario Gandelsonas' new book X-Urbanism: Architecture and the American City is divided into two main sections. The first is a text which provides a very broad and wide-ranging discussion of the history and development of America and its cities from the 15th century to the present Gandelsonas develops an argument which spans between Architecture and Urbanism-"Architecture and the city as signifiers pinned to two practices that have been constantly changing through time." Gandelsonas takes the macro-view: identifying and describing 7 "urban scenes" or archetypes such as " the grid" or "skyscrapers elements with significant impact on the development of the American City. Curiously, while Gandelsonas complains in his introduction that " the American City was always seen from Europe, most times in a subordinate relation to the European city, his observations of the American City appear to be also made through the prism of European Urbanism.

Oculus
"...a new book by architect, educator, and theorist Mario Gandelsonas provides a useful framework for thinking about cities in unprecedented ways. His new way of envisioning urban form is particularly welcome now that the New York City Zonning Resolution is being revised, because the proposed changes concern mass, height and architectural character. Gandelsonas' book entitled X-Urbanism: Architecture of the American City, approaches the subject with all those factors in mind."
